New Stearns® immersion suit extends cold-water emergency survival by 4 times

GOLDEN, Colo. –The Coleman Company, Inc., has created a revolutionary new U.S. Coast Guard-approved immersion suit under its Stearns® brand, the Stearns® Thermashield™ 24+. The suit has been tested to extend cold-water survival nearly four times beyond the U.S. Coast Guard standard of six hours in 32 degree water.

“We know the Thermashield 24+ immersion suit will dramatically increase the number of cold water rescues that can be completed when compared to current technology,” said David Allen, president of Coleman U.S. “Stearns has been providing mariners with innovative water safety solutions for more than 60 years, and we’re proud to offer this new cold water survival option to help bring these hardworking men and women home safely.”

The Thermashield 24+ utilizes a patented air-circulation system to move the wearer’s exhaled breath out to his or her extremities and back to their core, providing warmth to the limbs as well as protection from the elements. This warming feature works in tandem with the suit’s five millimeter insulating neoprene shell, allowing a wearer to maintain his or her body temperature for extended time periods.

“Oftentimes, maritime accidents happen at dusk when visibility is lowest, meaning rescuers can be a long distance away and need extended time to locate people in the water,” said Darin Webb, global director of product line management for Stearns. “While a traditional immersion suit may only provide a six-hour survival window, mariners wearing the Thermashield 24+ have approximately 24 hours to be located by rescue – that’s precious time that can make all the difference.”

The immersion suit also includes unique features like removable gloves and integrated hard-sole boots, which allow mariners to continue working while wearing the suit, providing more time to potentially save the vessel while prepared to abandon ship.

In addition to the U.S. Coast Guard approval, the Thermashield 24+ also features SOLAS and MED approvals.
